Given that humans, on average, use the bathroom 9-10 times per day and that the staff were either out of the room or asleep for about 18 hours per day, we were not anticipating promising results. However, after 14 days of monitoring 3 bathrooms, we learned that the average daily flush frequency was 56 per day – this was at least double that which we were expecting, thus showing the power of monitoring to establish where waste is occurring.
The cistern size was a standard 7 litre with the shattaf running at 12-13 litres per minute. The results were extrapolated to show that the annual water use by 346 toilets is 91.94 million litres.
By fitting aerators on the shattafs and retrofitting the Arumloo toilet, the below results can be achieved.
